FDO is the first widely accepted industry specification aiming at the Edge Computing and IoT device onboarding problem. In this article, you will learn a little bit more about FDO and how it addresses the device onboarding challenge at scale.

This is the second article of the Edge Computing device onboarding series. In the first part, we reviewed some challenges you could find while onboarding devices in an Edge Computing context.

In this article, we’ll go through the FDO industry specification, explaining its origins, architecture, and workflow.

The FIDO Device Onboard (FDO) specification

The onboarding problem is not new, and many companies worked on solutions that tried to cover the challenges that you find in Edge Computing device onboarding. Despite that, none of these solutions was chosen as the de facto standard because they were either lock-in solutions or had several additional problems.
